Question:

What's the purpose of road construction?

In my tiny town here in North TX, there's NOTHING "BUT" construction! I usually see nothing wrong with a street/road, & then 2 days later, they're doing construction that takes MONTHS. Now, our bus routes are detoured, & it's inconvenient because we have to walk 8 blocks to get to a bus stop, rather than 3. It's close to summer, HOT...I don't think I can survive this summer. I'm too poor to afford a car.

  1. This construction is most likly organized by your local, or national, government. The construction is most likly going on to try to improve the life of the citizens. If you don't feel happy about the construction, contact your local government. Tell them why they shouldn't be doing all of this construction.

  2. why are you on yahoo.CA?

  3. Well, the road construction that you are referring to is called pavement rehabilitation.  It is normally done at intervals of 5 years for asphalt (the black pavement) and 10 + years for concrete.  It sucks and if there was a good engineer where you are it wouldn't take that long nor would it be that dramatic an inconvenience.  From what you're describing, they may be adding additional roadways to accomodate more traffic for new things that they are building nearby or planning to build in the future.  Is there a traffic problem where you are (in the absence of this construction)?  It may actually help the situation.  I say get a segway and skoot about town....j/k but they are always entertaining to watch in America.

  4. oh my gosh I know the feeling. I see my ghetto town and wonder what in the world takes soo long to fix a street or repave or whatever?! The place I used to live had their stuff fixed FAST! I think towns with more money have their streets fixed faster.

  5. So the police can get overtime.

  6. to make the road safe.....

  7. to fix cracks, pipelines, potholes, and any defects with the road to ensure our safety, but yeah road construction gets really annoying when you have to deal with it every time.

  8. ...To make battleships.

  9. there is probity road construction so they can build new things and make it better so more people can live there

  10. A lot of times it is not the road that needs to be replaced. But the infrastructure under the road that needs to be replaced, storm drains, sewer and water lines

  11. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the 1st or last time), but if the road was fine and you're in a tiny town, the contractor probably donated to a politician and got a nice fat contract to do the road.  Less people around, less people to notice.  There is a road here in the boonies that we go down to go offroading, it gets resurfaced every 2 years by an outfit that gets paid 5x per mile what every other road in the area gets resurfaced at.

  12. I live in Alaska and they do all the road construction during our very short summer. It gets so that I dread going anywhere during the summer. A trip across town can  take me forever.

  13. You are LUCKY.

Here in NYC they NEVER fix the road.  And our cars take a beating.  And it is expensive to fix all the things that goes wrong.  It is better to get those roads fixed BEFORE they are really bad.

    Good Luck...

P.S.  Even if you ride the bus, the ride is horrible here.

  14. job security

  15. this is mainly because bush is president at the moment... they put texas construction bills along for the ride of another bill.  when that bill goes to house then to the president the president may veto a bill that has another bill attached.. however with these construction bills that are attached to other bills.. the president is saying it's ok... (since texas is his hometown afterall)

    construction is for many reasons

more lanes, better streets without potholes etc...

  16. to make the road more smooth and pleasant to drive on and safer
