What's the purpose of the Trilateral Commission?

I've been able to find history of this organization and it's membership list but no real reason for it existing other than to be a counter to the Council on Foreign Relations. If anyone knows or has an idea to it's actual purpose or a more defined one, I'm curious to know.

The Trilateral Commission is a non-governmental, policy-oriented discussion group of about 350 distinguished citizens from Western Europe, North America and Pacific Asia formed to encourage mutual understanding and closer cooperation among these three regions on common problems.

The idea of the Commission was developed in the early 1970s.
