  1. it had no other purpose but show what could be done with steel. it was supposed to be destroid but it is so stunning that it was kept and now, appart from attracting millions of tourists, it is also a big areal for tv and stuff. it is particularly amazing at night when it sparkles and i am proud to be born in Paris now!!!

  2. It was at that time the best of the best in iron-technology - was built in an extremely short period - the fact was France was looking for new industrial ways, and the best regions such as Alsace and Lorraine, which became top-industrial regions had been confiscated by Preussians.

About thirty engineers worked together under Eiffel's rule, and 400 iron-workers were on the work-place, non included the ones who worked in Gentilly fabrics, and the ones who carried elements on barges on the river Seine

So, beyond the colonial conquest which widely enabled France to forget the loss of the Eastern départemants, we had to show the world waht we could do -

The more spectacular was at the time, how to build such a thing, on very unstable underground, just close to the river Seine - thousands of tons of concrete have been melted and a permanent pumping had to work in order to get rid of invasive Seine water - Today, the tower is in perpetual rotation and has to be stabilized thanks to compensatory mechanisms, to  which nobody has access ( pity ).

Next time you visit the Eiffel Tower, think about the fact that this construction is an addition of calculated contradictory forces, and consider how the four continuous bows, which are the essential of the structure are splendid, and still today extremely MODERN , in their aspect.

Think also that the only solution in 1880, to assemble iron bars were rivets, red hot then hammered by specialized hand-workers, who previously had built the railway bridge of Garabit in central France, and the road bridge of Porto- Portugal - The same technology prevailed in the construction of iron boats such as Titanic, bit later- only around 1935, germans achieved the technology of soldering ( for boats and construction ) - for  which reason Eiffel Tower is now only a witness of an obsolete rivet assembly process.

  3. The Eiffel Tower was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a World's Fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.

Although it was intended as a temporary structure and was to be torn down 20 years after its completion, its usefulness as a base for a radio antenna saved it from destruction.

  4. Basically its just a point of interest. It was built for some thing celebrating the centenary of the french revolution (1889ish).

I think at one point they were going to tear it down but they kept it for radio signal tower use, so I guess usefulness did keep it standing at one point:) I don't know that its used for an antenna anymore though, its main purpose historically really has been just as a point of interest.

  5. Did You know that Gustav Eiffel shared His birthday with the guy who designed the millenium wheel?
