  2. I saw a reference that said someone sold their Olympic medal for $80,000 and donated the money to charity.   I don't remember when that was.

    Of course the real value of an Olympic gold medal is that it's priceless.

The rarity of the accomplishment allows the athlete deals, special endorsements, branding, etc. that can be translated to a lucrative career long after the Olympic medal was won
