  1. Georgia whole night with day was killing ethnic osetian civils which are russian citizens, they killed 10 russian peacepeakers,by constitution President was need start the war.

  2. righteousjohson has made a very good statement,Russia is trying to become a world power again. History repeats itself,so let us all watch and hope something good comes out of this!

  3. Empire Building and Opportunism.

They want to reel in all the breakaway republics that had gained their independence when the USSR dissolved. Also, they know that right now, there are no countries in the world capable of stopping them, Europe is impotent, America is busy, and China agrees with them.

They see an advantage, and they intend to exploit it as much as they can.

  4. Oil and the control of that pipeline and it's profits.

  5. The Georgians launched a blitzkrieg offensive trying to wipe out the break away Georgian region of South Ossetia that has been de facto independent from Georgia for more then 10 years.  In a swift military sweep overnight the Georgians managed to take over a large number of Ossetian villages and leveled with heavy artillery fire and almost took over the capital of South Ossetia inflicting heavy casualties on local civilian population.  There were also reports of Georgian forces firing on the peacekeeping forces stationed in the region killing numbers of russian peacekeepers.  Then the Russian troops crossed the border and now the war seems to be rolling in the other direction.

It is difficult to say what will be the final outcome.  One thing that is clear is that the Georgians will be kicked out of whatever territories they took overnight in the South Ossetia.  It is also clear that there will be no war between Russia and Georgia.  Well, there will be no war unless the Georgian president goes completely crazy.  Other then that it is hard to say anything because of the inherent complexity of the situation in South Ossetia, i.e. it is not clear what will be the final resolution.  Theoretically, Russia may now recognize South Ossetia as an independent country.

P.S. It is not what you will hear on TV in the states.  Unfortunately, the U.S. seems to be taking an unfair position in a such an apparently simple matter as an attempted ethnic cleansing of South Ossetian population by the Georgians.  Also, just for the record my view is obviously the Russian side of the story.

  6. "Russian authorities said several of its peacekeepers died in a Georgian attack"

  7. NO, my husband is from the area - he was born in Georgia and moved to Russia near there when he was small because of civil unrest.

The reason that Russia went into Georgia is because there was reports of ethnic cleansing.  Honestly, that happens there - my husband's family has seen it - people taken away and never come back.  The Georgian president is ridiculous and a tyrant.

The reason the US backs Georgia is because of oil.  If the US would open their eyes to what is going on with the people there - the people are being killed because they are separatists and want their own country (the Aphazians) - Georgia doesn't want that - that's all well and good until Georgia starts killing them off in refugee camps and burning their villages.  They aren't fighting the unrest properly - they are killing women and children instead of fighting the soldiers.

And yes, I'm from the US
