What's the right surfboard for me? ?

I am 6' 4" 260 pounds and I took 1 surfing lesson with little success. I have the desire but the body is slower to act. I'm in NJ where the waves are small, 2 - 4 foot is the consistent wave height. My 9 year old girl picked up on it in 15 minutes. I'm so jealous!! Suggestions on the board height, width, accessories (besides a 1st aid kit!) for me.

Let me ask for my daughters' sake also. She's a rail @ 50" tall and 2/3 of that is legs. What should I get for her?

Thank you.

  1. what you need is to find a surf instructor to work with on a regular basis until you find it comfortable to be on the water by yourself - same goes with your daughter.  Surfing is fun but it can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

I couldn't sit here and be honest to give you the type board you should buy - I'm not an instructor, tho i've surfed many times on the Southern California coast.  But you need to talk one on one with an instructor to give you full details and one lesson isn't enough.

Good luck with surfing - after you get in some lessons I think you'll really enjoy it!

  2. You need to buy some longboards to learn on. Also take some lessons to learn the basics.
