What's the rule about the number of carry on's in a plane?

I want to take my carry on luggage, and my laptop... but I also have my purse. I didn't know if I could have both, plus a purse... If I have to I guess I can put it in my luggage, I just did not know if a laptop bag, carry on luggage, and purse were ok...

Depends on the airline, but the basic rule is one carry on and one personal item.  A personal item is defined as a purse, laptop bag, etc.  

Put one inside the other (i.e. purse in the carry on) when you board the plane.  Then you can take it out to access your stuff.
