What's the scariest thing to happen while you were swimming in the ocean?

I have been swimming, surfing, diving, snorkeling in the ocean for fifty years. Just when I think of what might be the scariest thing, I remember another one. One underwater face to face with a shark while diving, a how do you do with a big barracuda while snorkeling, one split head on a hurricane wave (paddling out no less!) getting sucked out in a couple really fast rips, when I wasn't paying attention (and that's happened way too often). The ocean is VERY powerful, but it shouldn't be treated or thought about like something scary. It should be treated like this really wonderful, powerful thing that gives us beauty, and fun and even food. Treat the ocean with respect, don't panic in a bad situation and always know your limits, and there is no need for "scariest things."

I was paddling at Manly Beach with a group of people and the group next to us spotted a shark about a metre away from us. It was terrifying!! My sister saw the fin!

It was at La Jolla Cove and I was with my water polo team. We had to do some swims to help get into shape and we swam to were the water was like 30ish feet deep and then we came back. After getting out of the water and everything, our coach told us we were being followed by a shark about 90% of the time.

That was the last day of ocean swims for us.

I was snorkeling in Cozumel Mexico and i was with my boyfriend and i was pointing out a funky looking fish to him.

I then lifted my head and all i saw was TEETH! It was a baraccuda! I got so freaked out! I think i pissed myself (good thing i was in the water) LOL

While at Virginia Beach many years ago, I swam out to a reef.  When I stood up on the reef and looked toward the beach, there was a school of dolphins swimming through.  It scared the tar out of me and I never went that far out into the ocean again.

went swimming and was swimming with a friend around a cliff and we got hit by some big waves and got trapped on the top of these massives rocks and couldnt get up the cliff or swim to safety because of the size and force of the waves. it was really scary.

one time i was watching my little bro body board (he was probly about 12 yrs old) And I saw a big fin come up next to him - He saw it too and was freaking out...turns out it was a dolphin but that was pretty scary.
