  1. When you suck the drink with a straw, vacuum is created inside your mouth and straw. So atmospheric pressure push up the liquid to your mouth.

  2. sucking on the straw creates a low pressure/ vacuum above the liquid in the straw.  The atmospheric pressure above the liquid outside the straw creates downward pressure that forces the liquid in the straw to rise.

  3. air pressure and suction pressure.

  4. Nature abhors a vacuum.

  5. Inside of your mouth you create a partial vacuum.  This results in a pressure differential between the end of the straw in your mouth and the open end of the straw.  Due to the pressure difference, the fluid is driven toward the lower pressure until the column height of the liquid balances the pressure difference.  Therefore if you suck hard enough (create a strong enough vacuum in your mouth) the liquid ends up in your mouth.  If you don't suck hard enough, the liquid only goes partially up the straw.

  6. Atmospheric pressure and molecular adhesion.
