  1. The Short Wave radio market has really dried up. I have been DXing since the late 70s and I hate to tell you, It's just about gone.

I have a Drake S8 that cost 800 back in 1999 and I don't get too much these days. I really can't see investing too much cash in a dying indusrty.

Grundig is a great company, they come in every price range. Basically, the more you spend, the better they are.

Also check out the C.Crane Company website, they sell Sangene radios.

It really all comes down to what you want to spend. Grundig abd Sangene are both good companies. The YB400 has been a great value for years.

  2. You need something that covers all the bands and is built to last and is well designed (electronically). I would suggest looking at what Grundig and Sangean have to offer. I have been very impressed with Grundig and own two SW radios of theirs.

Don't forget that the antenna is a very important component too.

  3. AOR or Icom with a few vertical antennas and a longwire of roughly 250 ft.+ near the coastline...

That is the ultimate.... problem is those or top of the line. I find sometimes a ham rig with DSP can receive but unless it has the right filter doesn't receive the audio like I wised it would.

But the biggest thing is that antenna.... I've had sangeans that I've hooked to good antennas and made them sing already.

however best to invest in serious (near pro) level equipment possibly.
