  1. they have a 100 yard sprint race at los alamitos each year....but the standard short race is 300 yards, they do run 220 yards races once in awhile, for their distance horses they run at 870 yards, but once in awhile they do go 1,000 yards. all of their championship races are held at the classic quarter horse distance, of 440 yards....1/4 of a mile, that's where the name quarter horse came from, they will beat most other horses in a race of that distance.....there runninnnnnnnnnnng!!!!

  2. They write some races for QH's at 220 yards (1 furlong, an eighth of a mile) at recognized tracks.  At Cajun "bush" tracks and other non-sanctioned racetracks in the southwest, anything goes, and if someone told me that in Cajun country they did QH match races at 50 yards with a chicken tied to the back of the horse, I wouldn't doubt it.

  3. 220 yards. that's the shortest I've peronally seen at Los Alamitos in Katella, Cali.........

  4. There are 3 types of races in American Quarter horse racing.  Short sprints going 220 yards, 250 yards, 300 yards, 330 yards, and 350 yards.  Long sprints going 400 yards, 440 yards, 550 yards, and 660 yards.  Distance races around one turn of 770 yards, 870 yards, and 1,000 yards.

So the shortest race a Quarter horse can run in is 220 yards.
