  1. The exocarp (peel) of a fruit protects the endocarp (inside flesh) of the fruit from infection, infestation, and consumption in many cases.  In other cases, it might attract the fruit to be eaten and the seeds spread.  It may not do any of those things but in all cases, it holds the guts in.


  2. The fruit peel would help prevent the juicy part of the fruit from drying out.  It likely would also make the fruit less a-peeling to certain insects.
