Question:

What's the snooker ruling - broken rest?

Recently I was playing snooker and needed to use the rest so I put my cue to 1 side to pick up the rest from the side of the table, I put the rest on the table and left it to pick up my cue, immediately the x shaped bit became detached from the wooden part, the wooden part rolled and hit the pink. This mistake was no fault of my own as the equipment was faulty. Can somebody PLEASE tell me what is the official ruling here?

  1. It appears that this is not a foul and the balls should be replaced as they were before the occurence....rule 15 will apply in this case.

Apart from being a comprehensive and informative site, you can check out the thoroughly exhaustive rules at the following link - http://www.worldsnooker.com/

  2. the balls get replaced - no penalty - as far as i know - then you resume your shot (using another rest)

  3. 15. Ball Moved by Other than Striker

If a ball, stationary or moving, is disturbed other than by the striker, it shall be re-positioned by the referee to the place he judges the ball was, or would have finished, without penalty.

    (a) This Rule shall include cases where another occurrence or person, other than the striker’s partner, causes the striker to move a ball.

    (b) No player shall be penalised for any disturbance of balls by the referee.

In your situation,You were not in contact with the rest, so it is deemed the ball was disturbed by something other than the player(striker)   Replace the pink to the place where the referee and players agree it was and play on. NO FOUL  is called.

  4. Out side the game no pen..
