What's the space between galaxies called?

I was watching Stargate Atlantis and there were a few episode I remember that a character was stuck between the Pegasus (show's fake galaxy) and the Milky Way. It was basically open space. Is that what it's called? Just open space?

  1. It`s just space.

  2. not open. outer space.

  3. Space.  You could call it intergalactic space, just to use multisyllabic words, or to convey some idea of the great distances involved.  It's over a million light years to Andromeda.  And a light year is over a trillion miles.  So intergalactic space is big.  A million times a trillion is... is... is a boatload of miles!  Farther than the corner store, anyway.

  4. intergalactic space.  Some people get a little more poetic and refer to it as the intergalactic void, gulf, or some other fanciful term.  Everyone knows what they are talking about as long as you throw in the word "intergalactic"

  5. Intergalactic space.

  6. i am pretty confident it is called dark matter

  7. You just bought Season 4, didn't you?

It's called the galactic void.  Come on, I just watched this episode last week, I know somebody said it.

The space between stars within a galaxy is called the interstellar medium, FYI.

Anything, anything at all, out of Earth's atmostphere is called space. "Outer space" is essentially the same thing, but a genealization for more "out there" than just normal.

  8. just space

but i guess the guys that said intergalactic space are technically right by definition, between galaxy space. so yea...

  9. Inter-galactic space, as opposed to inter-stellar space (between stars) or inter-planetary space (between planets).

  10. You could use "intergalactic" space.  It is rarely used.  But it fits well with interstellar (between stars) and interplanetary (between planets) which are used regularly.

The word void is normally reserved for very large areas devoid of galaxies and, even, large "bubbles" devoid of galaxy clusters.

Dark matter is a "substance" that provides mass (therefore, gravity) but not much else.  And we do not know much about it.  It could be filling the intergalactic space.  But we can't see it nor detect it, other than by its gravitational effect.

  11. Space.  Inter-galactic space.

    .

  12. Intergalactic Space

  13. someone told me lightyears is a measure of outer space.

  14. Intergalatic space.

  15. I'm not sure, but i think i may have read somewhere that they are called voids. You can try googling it to see if i am right.

  16. it's called space

  17. its called space! lol

  18. The inside of barak osama's head!

  19. Space.  Yes, they made a name for it.  That name is space.
