  1. not a good place to go learn to surf. i'm sure (unless you are renting a beach house) you will have to park somewhere---good luck with that. when there are any waves there--its crowded. august could possibly be alright for waves. hurricane season kind of starts heating up around the mid-late august time frame. i dont mind surfing in a crowd (i grew up surfing 1st St VB) and i like surfing at WB--but if you are learning--got to Topsail Island. its much more learning friendly. actually, i've been going there lately for the parking.

  2. Like most of the Atlantic, the surf there is usually at it's smallest in the Summer. If you have somebody who is going to teach you, and they know the breaks there, you will be okay. Check this for details:

here is an excerpt for the surfline blurb:

Most of the crowding in Central and Southern North Carolina is tourist-related (big surprise). Every summer and holiday weekend, Raleigh and other inland cities catapult their masses to the beaches of Atlantic Beach south to Sunset Beach and living on the same canvas can be nerve-wracking to say the least. Other than the scores of waders, boogers and weekend loggers clogging the lineups, the surfer crowd factor is usually pretty mellow, and if you can hold your own in the water, chances are that there won't be a problem catching waves. (Remember: this rule may flip-flop with swell, weather, holidays, etc. and in no way applies to the town of Wrightsville Beach, which carries a completely separate set of statutes.)
