There's the old, arbitrary taxonomy of the animal kingdom that's based on how animals look. And there's the new taxonomy based on traceable DNA. What's the "DNA taxonomy" called?

  1. "Molecular Phylogeny" is the term you are looking for.

  2. There are 3 most common ways to categorize taxonomy based on how they look, genetic relatedness and ability to interbreed.

The one your looking for based on genetic relatedness is called Evolutionary Species or Molecular Systematics which emphasizes genetic relatedness

    The other two are:

    1. Biological species are group or organisms whose members have the potential to interbreed with each other in nature to produce viable, fertile offspring and cannot produce offspring with other species.

    2. Morphological Species is based on similar appearances.

  3. The term you are looking for is Molecular Systematics.

  4. I think the term you're after is phylogeny.  Phylogenetic trees are like taxonomic trees, but the goal is to group organisms by evolutionary and genetic relatedness, rather than more arbitrary characteristics.
