I live in Belgium and as you might know we have a lousy govermment.

I was wondering why we still have a monarchy in the first place and what use our king has...

Wouldn't we be better off electing a president and starting a republic?

  1. I live in Britain.....touche. Unelected, unaccountable, unlimited term heads of state should have died out a long time ago. Im not a Bolshevik but they had the right idea in 1918.

  2. Having royalty is just pomp and circumstance these days.

  3. There's no use for royalty nowadays except for show appearances and such.

Many still like the tradition and think that changing things may be to drastic when a monarchy is all you have know.

Look at the french it took them revolutions to get the system they have now, not saying a revolution is what is in need but just a strong movement of people who want to change things.

  4. In Belgium, the monarchy has shown why it is important, politically, just at the end of last year, with the political crisis that occurred there.  It was down to the King to pick the right man to become the Prime Minister in the interim government of National Unity. Although, the decisions were not his alone, he led the way and tried to broker a deal between the wallonian and flanderan, parties.

In Belgium in particular, electing a president would be particularly devastating to national unity.  The Wallonians would rarely be able to elect their representative to president, since there are less french speakers than flemish.  This would annoy the wallonians and they will call for more powers.  This in turn would annoy the flemish who are generally more wealthy and powerful.  The Flemish would want independence, and they may flourish.  however, the Wallonians would not be very well off without the Flemish.  And in my opinion the Flemish would be better off with that wallonians.

So the monarchy in a unifying power in Belgium and other countries around the worlds, particularly the UK and the Netherlands.
