it can demonstrate the difference in electric potential as the farther or closer you get.  another use is to shock physics students in class other than that really nothing.  although Tesla had try to create an electrical grid with one of those.   it was massive and would have worked but been really dangerous and probably screwed up the environment with the electrical waves
