  1. A crop. usually in the shoulder or hind quarters.


  2. It's called a "quirt" and you strike the rear behind the saddle.

  3. It is called the crop or a quirt. Rider usually goes for hindquarters on occasion the withers. Used or should be used as encouragement not punishment.

  4. It's called a crop, a good jockey normally uses it on the haunches... and fans(or taps it) it along the withers. It should only be used to keep a horses attention.

    There's great debate as to whether or not they should even be used.
