I might go on a people to people ambassador program in the summer of 2009; so just curious.

  1. Canberra in winter can be quite cold with nighttime temperatures sometimes dropping to -6C/21F although usually just on freezing.  Day temps average 11C/52F, so coldish but we have lots of really sunny days.  July tends to be dry.

  2. 3 months long!

  3. I live in Sydney and i hate the winter here.

It's obviously cold, no snow, but rain. It's intense in July.

Winter seems to be different each year - can't follow a typical trend (weatherwise).

    Spring is best - Sept-Nov.

In summer it's sizzling. Can't wait actually.

Don't be put off by the weather - just bring lots of warm clothes. The people ambssador program sounds great - good luck and have fun.

  4. If you have a free choice,go for Cairns in July, but be warned, you won't want to leave. It's the middle of the dry season; it will be pleasantly warm every day; you'll be able to swim and see the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests - definitely choose Cairns!

Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra are all cold and wet in July. Not as cold as the UK or most of the USA are in winter, but when Cairns is also on the table, there's simply no contest.

  5. I presume you mean OUR winter, June to August. (Spring starts officially this Monday.)

I'm in Cairns (Kuranda, really, in the rainforest mountains above Cairns).

Weather in Cairns over winter is very pleasant, it's not the tropical wet season (December - February), temperatures about a low of 15 to high of 28C. Generally about 4 degrees lower up in the mountains. The prime tourist season when 'southerners' flock to the tropics.

  6. Sydney: cold rainy and but with some warmer afternoons later on in the season. still pleasant but not horrible. about 5-20 degrees Celsius

Melbourne: Also cold and rainy. Colder than sydney and sometime really windy.

Canberra: totally miserable. Rainy.  cold. grey sky. about 0-15 degrees Celsius.

Cairns: not as bad as the southern cities but warmer than sydney.. not too bad really but has some rain.

If you are considering coming over here, it would be really fun for you.. don't worry about the weather it probably won't be that bad any way. this is just for the worst of it when you have lived here you whole life and have to sit in school and look outside at the gloomy sky during winter.
