Seriously ... that's the worst that can happen. It's not a flippant remark, nor sarcasm to your question.

In all the troubles and pains, the trials and tribulations, for all the wealth and the health one has nothing can be worse than to go through life blind and ignorant of the truth; and then go to h**l for all your troubles here and now.

The worst that can happen to anyone is that you die and go to h**l.

Everything else pales in comparison.

There are many documented cases of near death experiences, which appaently are very pleasant.  So, when the body dies, the soul goes to a better place; usually.  There has also been a few reports of something called the negative near death experience; which apparently are unpleasant in the extreme.  Can you imagine suffering pain and misery for all eternity, or until you come for your next life.  I think that would be the worst that could happen to a person's soul.

On a more earthly scale, the USA is currently making war with oil producing countries, in order to take control of the world's oil supply.  If the planet's governments actually woke up to this fact then they may very well unite and decide to do something about it.  The USA is simply ignoring all international laws and participating in a very cruel form of empire building.  Perhaps after the global conflict that the USA is about to start, the USA will cease to exist.

The first thing that popped into mind was along the lines of "Total instantaneous destruction of the whole universe." I was thinking as an observer of the whole universe.

But if everything disappeared, the observer is dead too, and cannot perceive what he thought was the "worst", after all .

When I saw "you will live forever," I felt, "hmm... now THAT answer is going somewhere. That is...gee...no matter WHAT happens, or whatever destruction is caused you go on perceiving, and adding to your memories. Imagine having 10000000000000 years of memories, pains, losing the rest of humanity, perhaps the solar system. No matter what happened, you'd still be alive. What loneliness!

That is worse than total instantaneous destruction of the universe.

So we have LIVING FOREVER worse than TOTAL INSTANTANEOUS DESCTRUCTION  OF UNIVERSE.

Ok, now lets add something more. Let's add something that this observer totally abhors into this equation- for example, excruciating pain. For example, drown in a large tank of acid and the emotional pain of say, humiliation at the same time.

LIVING FOREVER + EXCRUCIATING PAIN is worse than *just* living forever.

In some beliefs, they would call this combination, an afterlife in an extremely painful place. a.k.a h**l.

Well, there is the answer.

The worst thing that can happen is if the concept of h**l or something similar actually came true to you, as the observer of the "worst case"

I cannot fathom anything worse than that, no matter how hard I try.

The basic assumption in my argument is that the observer must be able to perceive the "worst"-ness of what he dreads. Dying off is too easy.

For Humanity: That planet Earth disappears killing everyone or another World War.

For the US: That all computers die erasing SS#, Bank accts., etc.

For Florida (where I live): That a big Hurricane comes and send us back underwater.
