What's this in my anti-freeze?

i bought a '95 jeep a little over a month ago and the anti-freeze is greasy.. an way more oily than it should be. it's even almost a brown color.

but! ...it's not the motor oil so i know i don't have a bad head gasket or a cracked head or anything like that.

do some dealers put something in it when they have it serviced? my cousin bought a minivan to help with his new baby and it pretty much has the same problem.

i wanna change it, but i don't know if it's important.

thanks!

  1. change  it

  2. some people puts a little bit of motor oil in the radiator to help to lube the water pump, maybe that,s it. prestone anti-freeze is 1 of the best anti-freeze you can buy.

  3. you need to put some radiator cleaner.it had prestone coolant in it.take it out immediately and replace it with something other than prestone.but you need to have it flushed or use radiator cleaner.it works pretty good.

  4. It may have had a leak at some point and someone added a stop-leak additive, such as barrsleak.  If it's not a nice clear color I would drain it, flush it, and refill with new coolant.  You don't want it gumming up in your heater core.  It could even be the original coolant, which you definately want to change if it's 13 years old.

  5. the coolant is fouled flush and refill. I wouldn't disregard the head gasket tho. many times they're overlooked till its too late especially during the summer. I highly recommend getting the coolant tested for carbon from combustion.  then a compression test on the engine.
