What's this kind of "advertising" called?

I heard that movie theaters used to use it to sell more snacks and drinks, by like inserting pictures of popcorn or soda in the middle of a movie for like small fractions of a second, so that you couldn't consciously see it, but you're mind sub-consciously saw it, which made you want it, which increased the theaters sales.

I think it was made illegal, though, because you were "brainwashing" people to buy things.

If any of that made sense, lol.
