Question:

What's this "Chatter" I hear when riding?

I bought a 1986 Honda Nighthawk 450 with 24k miles. I've had it about 1 1/2 weeks and have put about 100 miles on it since then. Within the past few days I've been hearing what I'll call "Chatter" coming from the front of the engine, possibly the clutch area. I hear it mostly when starting from a dead stop through about 3rd gear. It probably continues after that, but with a helmet, engine noise and wind I can't tell. I have not noticed it when the clutch is pulled in, only when released.

Does this sound like I'll soon be in the market for a new clutch, or just an adjustment of some type? Could be maybe something in the gearbox? I've looked around and don't see anything loose anywhere, so I'll rule that out. I also have no idea if this is the original clutch or not.

It runs great, it just makes that noise. I can't imagine this is normal, even with the age/type of bike it is.

  1. you know, on older bikes this chatter is sometimes normal, esp when hi gearing it or under a load. does it do it a cruising speed or higher rpm.

  2. if your bike has a chain, which I think it does, then it could be your chain is worn out and needs to be lubed or replaced.  if you have a stiff link, then it can make some chattering noises as it bends around the front sprocket.

try to get your rear wheel off the ground, and then in neutral gear spin the wheel around and check your chain slack as you spin the wheel.  chances are you will find several tight spots.  if one is really bad then you need to change that chain and sprockets.

  3. Check the cam chain adjustment.

  4. I think Robert hit the nail on the head.A dry or worn chain and sprockets can cause that for sure.A chain that's too tight will also do it.

  5. This is easy...and I know theres going to be a few that totally disagree with me...trust me on this...ive been there.

Youve got an old chain, it may look ok to the eye, but after time they tend to fall apart. Its been dry at some point and riden that way. It causes all sorts of problems that no ammount of lub will fix. You need to replace it. When you first take off I bet you hear it the most, sorta like a creaking, cracking sound? Its your chain. replace it and the problem is gone. good luck.
