What's up with Heart Cards?

Question

I've kinda noticed in my life that there's always been something weird about the heart cards in a regular deck of poker cards.

First of all, the king is suicidal.

It seems that in any kind of show (especially anime or video games) that the Hearts are especially important.

Like G-Gundam, Looking Glass Wars & Looking Glass Wars: Seeing Red, etc.

I mean, surely you've seen it right?

I was just wondering why many people see it as more important than the other cards.
