I'm sure everybody has heard what's happening with Russia and Georgia. I don't know much about it, only that around fifteen-hundred people were killed by Russians and that the Georgian president has declared war, or something like that anyway.

Anyway, I want to know why Russia has suddenly attacked Georgia. Well, will somebody tell me what has happened between Russia and Georgia, what brought on this and why they are fighting.

Hey, I could be wrong with whatever I'm saying 'cos I don't know that much about it, so will somebody explain it for me please? Thanks.

  1. Ok, here you have it from Anderson Cooper's AC360, CNN:

"If you’ve never heard of South Ossetia it’s understandable.

This tiny, mountainous region in the Republic of Georgia, population only 70,000, considers itself independent from Georgia and lives that way, with its own secessionist government. Most of its citizens, ethnic Ossetians, want to be reunited with Ossetians in Russia; many of them even have Russian passports and use Russian money.

The South Ossetians have held two referendums on independence but no country in the world has recognized their vote.

Now, South Ossetia is engulfed in fighting, refugees are fleeing north to Russia and the international community is scrambling to avert a wider conflict."

If people there want to separate from Georgia, let them. Remember that Western countries supported Kosovo's independence.

  2. they are at war.

  3. It is just Russia's ambitions to create former Soviet Union. So Russian politicians did everything to escalate situation in South Ossetia. They gave Russian passports to some SEPARATISTS. And now Russian officials declare that they "are depending" their citizens and they are bombing not only the conflict zone of georgia but all of the parts of georgia. It is the country which is a host of citizens of many countries. Should they depend their citizens from Russian aggression?

It is not just a problem of Georgia, The world should intervene!

  4. So Georgia is wrong for trying to retake a part of its OWN country that Russia ADMITTED was Georgian territory?..Hmmm..Funny...

  5. Georgia attacked South Ossetia and killed 1,500+ people.  Russia moved in to move Georgia out of the autonomous regions.

Georgia is the aggressor. Now, Russia has removed Georgia, but are retaliating hitting Georgia's military complexes.

  6. The fact stands firmly saying Georgia launched the attack first at the eve of Olympic game by taking the chance that Russia's Puttin was in Beijing for the Olympic game opening. Its idiot president had also dreamed to draw US and NATO into its war with Russia. But in reality, that idiot has learned  a hard lesson from  neighbouring Russia bear than he would never forget.

If one looks into history, how many wars have been directly initiaed by NATO ?  At least I do not remember any. The best NATO can do is to send peace keeping force at the agreement of those nations under concern. So one should rule out a war with  direct involvement of NATO.

It is true Georgia is a staunch ally to US by sending 2000 troops to Iraq to help Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam also sent large number of military specialists to train Georgia to counter Russia's influence, which means US has never consider Russia as an international partner. Will US get into war with Russia this time? With 2 never-ending wars in Iraq and Afghan, with a deep recession at home, with huge national deficit on hand, with high inflation and unemployment, the question will be "Does Uncle Sam have  the courage to do war with Russia by bankrupting our nation?" Not mentioning Russia's ally Iran is next to Georgia.

To have a fair solution to this problem, one recalls that Uncle Sam carved Kosovo out from Serbia a few months ago in the name of Kosovo people's will and independence. This time, Uncle Sam should sit  down on his  bench quietly to let Russia take care of its business with that little province, that has been under Georgian oppression for 19 years and has kept asking Russian for help.  This will make a fair competition in this world super power's  war game if Uncle Sam knows the rule of the game.

If Uncle  Sam considers Russia as an enemy and plans to start another cold war, today's Russia will form a strong alliance with China together with  rest of the Muslim nations to meet western nations' challenge. That will trigger a WWIII.

Today's Russian president has ever determined to bring his country back to its old  glorious days. He is much tougher  and capable than Puttin and he knows his country is much wealthier than before because of oil, natural gas and all the natural resources. As to Russia's neighbour China, it is equipped with large number of nuclear war heads and a big army,  and its missle did shoot down acurately the satellite on the orbit. When one adds those two up together with those oil rich Muslim nations, Uncle Sam should think carefully before he jumps.

  7. There have been lots and lots of questions about this since it all started on Thursday night. It's a territorial war between Russia and Georgia over some disputed territory. It began when Georgia began bombing a disputed region called South Ossetia on Thursday night. The Russians have since moved in and the war is now spreading to other areas around Georgia. People are worried because they don't know how far it will spread - Georgia is an ally of the West.

Suggest you do a search on Georgia here on Y!A and you'll get tons of information, and of course you can just watch the news - it's all over the news at the moment.

  8. Let me put this as simple as possible, Russia is attacking Georgia because of hunger for more territory..

  9. Georgia is using it's ties to the West to murder South Ossetians and should be resisted.

The Russians are within their rights to protect the South Ossetians and South Ossetia shoule be alowed to cecede from Georgia.

After all, it was ok for Kosovo to cecede from Serbia!!!!!

  10. It's not so much a case of what's up with Russia and Georgia. The issue goes deeper.

Now it’s beginning to look like the whole thing is US and Israeli inspired adventure.

Georgia, the ex-Soviet province, now is a member of NATO. The West is bound to protect NATO members. Georgia just attacked its own breakaway province of Ossetia, which has aligned itself with Mother Russia, despite Ossetia’s being guaranteed independence since 1992. Russia has responded with a military incursion of its own that could possibly be expected to include all of Georgia.

Was this orchestrated at this strategic time by the USA & Israel to occupy and distract the world and Russia from an Iranian invasion? Time will tell !

  11. It was Georgia who suddenly attacked Southern Ossetia.

Southern Ossetia gained de-facto independence after the war of ossetians gained 92-94. Russian peacekeepers were put there by the UN. Georgia doesn't have right to have its troops there. But the georgian government want that region back. So for the last 2 years Georgia was moving its forces towards Ossetia borders. In night of 07.08 Georgia started an invasion to S.O. They started shelling Tshinvali - 2000 civilians were killed, they attacked Russian peacekeepers base and 10 solders were killed.

S.Ossetia asked Russia as an official pecekeeper for help. After the UN did nothing to stop the fire and Ossetia was shelled for 15 hours, Russian troops came for rescue.

Now Russian forces are pushing Georgian troops away from S.O.
