What's up with everyone saying it's 1997??

Yeah, not really. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it 2008? Everyone is saying the world will end in 2000, 8 years ago. What's up with that and how did they get the idea that it's 1997?

the ancient aztecs have a clalendar and at the end of it is 2012 and they say thats when the world will end, i dont know where ppl are getting 2000 from

The world is not ending anytime soon if at all.  It was here a billion years ago and unless the sun burns out, will be here another billion or so.  We, as lowly human beings, are not going to change that.  The world will evolve as it always has.  Only those that live in fear would believe we could possibly do anything to change such a massive force.
