Question:

What's up with my transmission?

At least I think that's the problem. My 2000 Camaro V6 Automatic wants to jerk when it's changing gears: 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc. This only happens occasionally by the way. It's fine most of the time. And when I say jerk, I don't mean the normal shift between gears. I mean like a jerk that will give someone whiplash. Maybe not quite that much, but it's still pretty strong. I haven't really figured out what triggers it, other than maybe driving for a long time, but it seems to do it when it feels like it. And FYI, I change my oil on time, there's plenty of transmission fluid, basically this is the only thing wrong with my car. Does anyone know what it might be before I take it to a mechanic?

  1. Try changing the tranny fluid and replacing the tranny filter and pan gasket.

  2. change the fluid and filter and add a bottle of lucas transmission fix as it frees up valves in the tranny if one is stuck.

  3. Maybe sticking valves. There is a product you can buy for that- if thats the problem. Can't remember the name but its about $30 per quart. Sounds like a lot- but thats cheap if it works.

Also your transmission fluid will break down over time- you must have it changed out. Depending on the type of transmission- some are every 50k miles others go 100k.

  4. You don't mention if your check engine/service engine soon light is on or not. If it is you may have a code 1870 stored in memory. This will default the trans to increased line pressure to protect it, causing harsh shifting. Many times caused by valve body wear in the TCC isolator valve area. Resulting in a torque converter slip. This usually shows up after driving awhile. If this is the cause a trans rebuild and valve body repair is in order. If your a gambler maybe just a valve body repair, given the converter hasn't been too damaged.
