Question:

What's up with the MMA ring fights?

I've seen it so many times, fighters get so close to getting thrown out of the ring. Then referee has to stop them and have them restart in the middle again. Did they consider using a fence or something?

  1. UFC has a patent on cages but only on cages in the shape of an octagon... i like the use of the corners in a ring but i dont like how ppl can fall out, but a cage makes it harder for an opponent to get trapped and easier for soemone getting beat to run away... and ive seen cages in the shape of a square, they just never work out

  2. i think those began in old boxing rings....the adaptation of a cage came with evolotion of the sport(i.e. pride and ufc) but its just my thought i havent exactly done much research on that one...sorry hope i helped

  3. I'd like to see a picket fence. Ouch.

Or maybe an electric fence so everytime you touch it you get shocked haha would be tight

  4. if you look it up....zuffa, ufc has a patent on cages i think. i saw it in an combat sports international catalog. they sell cages.

i dont recall exactly what it said.

  5. FIrst off. I want to point out the UFC DOES NOT. DOES NOT have a patent on the octagon cage. THEY DO HAVE A PATENT on calling the said cage "THE OCTAGON".

The reason for this was, the Ufc wanted the uniformity to help the emerging sport earn more official sanctioning. Thats why in America, all mma orginzations that have a cage, have a cage that is in an octagonal shape.

Now to answer the question at hand more directly:

Ring fights and cage fights are different. Equally different.

They each have pros and cons.

The cage is held in high regard (especially by americans, i personnaly like it), because the cage itself can be utilzed effectivly. It helps box a person in a limits their escape....making it a great place for ground and pound.

    The cage favors the agressor.

The ring makes it easy for someone to rest on. Much harder to takedown. Helps against ground and pund (u get on other side of ropes- aggresor has to punch through that).

    the ring favors the defender.

People like the cage because it opens up vrand new possibilities in the fight and makes combat more resoureful.

People (americans mostly) like that alot.

People in the ring limit the possibilies but force the fighter to try to fight in the open space on the mat more. They want the fights in the center on the open mat. They dont want fight to go the edge or wall. They want to imagine a very neutral battleground. No advantages.

Thats why Pride (japanese people) favors the ring. They think its more fair.

    I hope this helps.

  6. it's probably got something to do with the vibe they wanna send. They think every detail about that kind of thing out. They know how it's gonna look and what messages it will send. Or how a thing like a ring or cage will make you think of the whole company different. That would be my guess

  7. The ring allows a better view for the spectators.

The cage provides more security to the fighters.

    It's a trade-off.
