Question:

What's up with the crazy fluctuating weather?

I live in Sacramento, and the weather has always fluctuated, but this year it seems to be even more extreme.

One day it will be bikini time by 8am, and the next day you're packing on layers.

I have a couple questions;

Why is the weather like this?

Is it dangerous or harmful?

Is it a kind of warning for more extreme changes?

  1. Sometimes spring is a little delayed because cooler weather from Canada is still over the USA.  As the Jet Stream migrates back into Northern Canada that should bring the end to the large swings in temperature.  As it is,  this time of year sees warmer surface temperatures with cold air riding over top of the warmer air.   This causes massive breakouts of severe weather.

  2. First off it is not dangerous or harmful...although in a way you can say it is as when the airmasses clash you will get severe weather episodes.

    Its no real warning for anything in the future.

    Welcome to spring.  Extreme changes like this aren't as uncommon as people think.  As we near the warmer months the SOuth begins to warm up very fast but up North it may take a while longer, especially during certain pattern types.  For example the west has been cool as the western 2/3 of the country are in a trough while the East is under a strong ridge which is way it has been warm here.  As cold fronts move through the country they are brigning down this colder air which is to the North.

    For the Southern Plains into the Ohio Valley Areas watch out over the next 5-10 days for some possible major severe weather events as we will see a strong system eject from the SW and deepen very rapidly.  The cold front looks to be quite potent as temperature graident along the front is quite large.

  3. Spring weather can be like this while the weather patterns battle it out.  It will get warm and stay warm, for a fact.
