Question:

What's up with the whole global warming issue?

Do you believe in global warming? Is something really warming the earths surface and going to impact us in the long run? I guess I need others opinion to build upon my own. Deep down a part of me believes in it, and another half of that knows that it could be nothing. What do you think?

  1. HERE'S THE DEAL:

WE ARE OVER USING UNRENEWABLE SOURCES WHICH MEANS WE ARE USING FOSSIL FUELS FASTER THAT THEY ARE BEING MADE. EVENTUALLY, WE WILL HAVE TO FIND A NEW, AFFORDABLE ENERGY SOURCE.

SOME SCIENTISTS HAVE TRIED CORN OIL BUT IT'S TOTALLY NOT FAIR TO ALL OF THE MEXICANS BECAUSE MOST OF OUR FOOD IS MADE OF CORN.

ALSO, SOME PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY A HYBRID, OR SOLAR PANNELS WHICH MEANS WE ARE OVER USING ENERGY.

GLOBAL WARMING IS CAUSED BY THE GREEN HOUSE EFFECT.

THE GREEN HOUSE EFFECT IS WHEN SUN RAYS ENTER OUR ATMOSPHERE AND ARE TRAPPED.

THE ICE CAPS AT THE NORTH POLE REFLECT SUNLIGHT SO, BEFORE GLOBAL WARMING STARTED, THE SAME AMMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT THAT WOULD COME IN, WOULD GO BACK OUT.

    GUESS WHAT?!

ALL THAT ICE IS MELTING, SO IT'S DOUBLE THE BAD, WHICH MEANS THAT SUNLIGHT KEEPS COMMING IN BUT ISN'T SENT BACK OUT!

THIS IS ALSO CAUSING THE SEA LEVELS TO RISE.

ALL OF THE ABOVE ALSO MEANS THAT POLAR BEARS CAN NO LONGER STOP AND REST UPON A PIECE OF ICE BECAUSE THERE'LL BE NO ICE TO REST UPON!

THIS WILL EVENTUALLY TURN INTO EXTINCTION OR ADAPTATION.

POLAR BEARS WILL EVOLVE INTO SOME SORT OF SPECIES WITH GILLS AND MAY BE ANPHIBIOUS.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF DARWIN'S THEORY OF EVOLUTION AND SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.

TO SUM IT ALL UP, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE BECAUSE WE'RE NOT PREVENTING IT AS WELL AS WE COULD.

    I TRULY HOPE THIS HELPED:)

    BOB, MATTHEW, YOU GUYS ROCK!

  2. See the Science section of the NYT for Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

"President Bush is set to lay out for the first time a specific long-term goal for limiting the atmospheric buildup of greenhouse gases linked to global warming and some means the United States will use to reach it.

He pledged last year to extract by the end of 2008 a shared long-term goal of this sort from the dozen or so countries responsible for 85 percent of emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases — including established economic powers and emerging giants led by China and India. A meeting of that group of “major economies,” as the Bush administration describes the worlds largest gas emitters, is scheduled in Paris Thursday and Friday.

Last year, Mr. Bush said the goal would not be binding, and administration officials said this was the only way to get universal agreement. But he said nations would have to show their commitment by listing actions, including mandatory steps, they would take domestically in coming decades to stay on track. Parallel talks would continue on a new climate treaty, to be negotiated by the end of 2009."

I think that the American public is going to suffer not from the effects of global warming, but from the governments rulings and actions that will cost the American consumer at a time when money is tight. Solar energy is NOT FREE. Water power is not free and wind power costs a bundle too. Who is going to pay for the retrofits of everything?

I like the idea of Solar, Wind and Water power. I don't like the price. AND THE CORN THING FOR ETHANOL IS ALREADY DISASTEROUS FOR THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES....PLUS LESS WHEAT IS BEING PLANTED AND HENCE BREAD PRICES ARE RISING FAST.

  3. Re: Godschild: correct. Only thing is, there's a fair chance that the earth will "automatically correct itself" without us on it.

  4. of course global warming is real

but it is not a big issue

the earth will automaticly correct itself

how do you think there was an ice age

the earth corrected itself and made everything normal

  6. Global warming is real. All the scientific community acknowledges that it is real. It is also a real issue.   I think that hollywood has kind of dumbed down the whole issue though.  The whole global warming thing is no more than just another hollywood fad/trend right now.  Scientists have known about global warming for some time now.  It was just hollywood and al gore that really blew the issue up.  Yes, we should stop polluting and recycle and find reusable energy but these hollywood people are just being hypocritical.  They preech to us about "going green" (being more energy efficient and polluting less) while they fly around in their private jets pumping god knows how much pollution right in the atmosphere.  If people are going to make a real effort to curb global warming, they should realize that buying a hybrid or toyota prias is not the solution.  We need to force our government to make the enormous factories cut down on Carbon dioxide emmissions.  And then once America has started working to cut down its own pollution, we can set and example for China and India and other industrial countries to follow our good example.

  7. yeah global warming is real and YES it's been going on for millions of years people. the whole basis for global warming and us needing to cut down on carbon dioxide was discredited. this is an issue that we have NO CONTROL OVER!! look it up on the net!! infowars.com has an awesome article about it right now on their site and a graph showing the amount of carbon in the atmorsphere millions of years ago. so think to yourselves... how is it possible that dinosaurs could have produced has much CO2 has we do right now?? HMMMM...

  8. Real, mostly caused by us.

This is science and what counts is the data.

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)

    Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut

Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

    summarized at:

There's a lot less controversy about this is the real world than there is on Yahoo answers:

    http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/a...

And vastly less controversy in the scientific community than you might guess from the few skeptics talked about here:

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/fu...

"There's a better scientific consensus on this [climate change] than on any issue I know...  Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point.  You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."

  9. greenhouse effect-when the sun's rays hit the earth they are reflected and go in the space. while, others are trapped in by greenhouse gases, likeCO2. Greenhouse gases are good at some levels, they keep the others temperature warm, during night and if don't have it earth would have been cold barren planet like mars. But excess greenhouse causes increase of earth's temperature more than normal, because the gases as gases like CO2 in the atmosphere increase more sun's rays are trap therefore rise in temperature. which is global warming.  I believe It is our fault as we as people of this earth, are using substance that is damaging the earth's environment, a place we live on.. issue is technology vs earth(environment)

  10. real, mostly caused by us this time around.

    here's a simple explanation for kids;

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/climate/evidence/gr...

    heres a quite simple explanation for grown ups with loads of links;

    http://environment.newscientist.com/chan...

willow, you have to stop flashing that link to the silly site of the architect trying to sell his home-published book, its not really fooling anybody.

  11. I think its happening because we have used more of the earths resources in the last 50 years than in the whole of history and it cannot continue at this rate. Its only logical.

  12. In my opinon there is far more important issues than global warming. What about Pollution, the food crisis (which has been caused by the push for "green" energy), Ecconomic crisis, etc

There are lies, dam lies and global warming science. It's almost as bad as Christianity verses Atheism. Whether you are for or against the climate change theories the science that is used is extremely biased and doesn't included the wider picture.

An example of this is the GISS graphs that people like Bob always link to. The GISS graphs do show a increase in temperature but are only 1 of 4 respected indicators and the other three show no growth for the last 10 years. The reason for this is that GISS takes 1950-1980 as their reference period and not 1960-1990 as the others do. This period was of low temperature and if you adjust GISS to use the modern time frame it also does not show an increase but a flat-line. This type of adjustment is above most people who do not have a back ground in science and so the flaw is missed.

A lot of other data when compared doesn't make sense. For example if you take figures from Chris Goodall, campaigning author of How to Live a Low-Carbon Life and the times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk... . Beef CO2 levels taken from New Scientist publication in July 2007 that suggested that 1kg of meat cost the Earth 36kg in global warming gases. You can prove that walking produces more CO2 than driving a car!!!

  13. The best most simple answer is YES there is a huge factor influencing the earth's temperature. Ready?

    THE FREAKIN SUN.

There you go now you are smarter than the average believer in man made global warming no thanks needed.

  14. industrializatin

  15. global  warming is over

  16. I think it's a crock.  The temperature of the planet has always shifted.  We used to have tropical animals in the Thames Valley, and then in the seventeenth century it used to freeze so bad they had fairs on the river itself.  This was dreamt up by a gang of third rate academics, promote by journos desperate for a story and latched onto by a bunch of bourgeois lefties trying to look virtuous by making US pay more for things THEY can easily afford.  Just think, if we could get the plebs back on buses then pater could drive his rolls more freely up and down the motorway.  The questions you have to ask are:

    a) Why have people only just started bleating about it if it has been going on since 1750.

    b)  Why has the Earth's surface actually been cooling for the last ten years, due to La Nina.

Oh, and c) Why has it been such a bloody cold winter.

Don't believe anything you read in the papers and be highly suspicious of publicity =- hungry academics from third rate universities.
