What's up with these tiny ants?

I know they're called sugar ants because they like sweets, but they're freaking me out.

I finished an italian ice, and set the empty container down. Within minutes it was swarming with the tiny ants.

I am on the 2nd floor, how did they get from where they were to my tabletop in such a short time. I guess they smell the sweet stuff, but to have a couple dozen ants appear out of nowhere is just crazy. It's like they were lying in wait, in the off chance that someone would leave something sweet out and then sprang into action.

I have the same problem. It drives me crazy. They literally appear out of nowhere. soooo CREEPY  I keep spraying with Ant Killer and it keeps them away for about a month and then the little buggers appear again. They hide in any crevace or dark area (behind cabinets). I have been told the only way to get rid of them for the entire Summer is to hire an exterminator.

try washing your countertops with lemon juice this is a natural deterent to ants. Also they don't like black pepper either

i really dont know if im supposed to be answering this or not, its not really a question. BUT! yes ants can crawl unbelievably fast, and yes up walls, the other possibility is that (hinting that you've had other problems with ants before) that they have become accustomed to being in a room with occasional food laying around for them to grab.
