  1. When you have video in a particular format on your camcorder and you need it to be a different format, you need to "encode" it.

    So... If you have a miniDV tape based camcorder and import the video to your computer and want the file to be a .avi, you need to use something to encode that DV file into .avi format.

    Whether it "takes forever" depends on how long the video clip is, what format you have and what format you want to go to and the speed of your computer's CPU.

    If I encode a 7 minute high-definition (HDV) video file to a .mov file to upload to YouTube, that will take about 30 minutes  on one of my slower computers and less time on one of my faster computers.
