Question:

What's with the national anthem in Dallas?

When the national anthem is sung in Dallas, the crowd emphasizes the word "star". How lame is that? It's just like when Carolina made its run to the cup and they crowed stressed the "rockets Red Glare". Both are just so sad. Is this how they cheer for their team? It seems so tawdry. Are there any other teams that rape the anthem like this?

  1. The fans at the Met Centre in Bloomington, Minnesota started that chant back in the early days of the franchise when it was the Minnesota North Stars, and it has stuck.  When the Oklahoma South Stars played in the Central Hockey League in the 70s, they did it to.

It's a sign of pride between the fans, the team, and the anthem.

Disrespecting the anthem or the flag is certainly something I have a problem with if it is done in distaste (Booing the entire anthem, burning the flag, etc), but most of these rituals are done in good taste.

Chicago cheers through the anthem because the Edmonton Oilers fans booed the Star Spangled Banner in the Conference Finals in the mid 80s, and it was Chicago's way of letting their Canadian friends to the north know how they felt about the anthem.

After 9/11, there were several ocassions at MLB and NFL games where fans would cheer various sections of the anthem as being proud Americans, nobody called it disrespectful then.

There is no written rule that says to respect the anthem you must stand quietly at attention while it is played.  People respect the anthem in different ways.

  2. I don't mind it... I think it's funny actually.  I'm not very patriotic, but I don't think it's disrespectful at all... it's just a way of cheering for your team.

During some line breaks, chants of "LET'S GO RANGERS!!!" can be heard throughout MSG.

  3. when ever the Stars play @ San Jose, the crowd boos when they get to the "stars" part

  4. I agree that it is disrespectful.

I'm not one of these guys who gets all upset about something like this, though.

If I was a Dallas fan, I wouldn't do it.

No big deal, but yeah, it is disrespectful.

The only thing Texans love more than America is Texas.

  5. Chicago fans cheer through the whole anthem.

Think all this c**p is disrespectfull... the only thing you should do is sing along or be quiet.

  6. Unfortunately, ever since Whitney Houston sang the anthem all those years ago they have mutilated it. While she did a wonderful, very emotional job w/ it at the time, it led to a slowing down and dragging out of what is supposed to be a quick tempo upbeat piece of music. I hate the way they drag it out anymore.

  7. During the '99 cup finals, the Sabres fans booed when they said the word star. I think thats worse

  8. In Atlanta they do it for the Braves games- baseball.  Home of the BRAVES.

    I'm okay with it.

  9. o come on...its a sports game, everyones pumped, whats the harm in saying "star" a little loud? I agree that its bad that buffallo booing was bad, cuz thats disrespecting the song. but emphsizing star is not bad

  10. we've always yelled "stars", as far as I can remember
