Question:

What's worse extincting ourselves due to GW or bringing down over half the species with us?

I think it is a absolute and utter shame what human beings are doing to the environment. The cause extinction of even one species is a travesty beyond comprehension but do we stop there, no.

As you can see below from the estimated stats we are losing literally 10's of thousands every year (3 per hour).

"Scientists are warning that by the end of this century, the planet could lose up to half its species, and that these extinctions will alter not only biological diversity but also the evolutionary processes itself. They state that human activities have brought our planet to the point of biotic crisis.

In 1993, Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson estimated that the planet is losing 30,000 species per year - around three species per hour. Some biologists have begun to feel that the biodiversity crisis dubbed the "Sixth Extinction" is even more severe, and more imminent, than Wilson had expected."

  1. Well, the first three answers show the level of awareness and intelligence here.  That's the kind of ignorance we are up against.

If it should come to pass that that many species go extinct, it won't look good for our species.

    Perhaps they don't understand this.

  2. First of all Global warming is bullshit, Second, you are nuts.

  3. can i eat the other species?  heck they are warm, maybe ill wait till they are medium rare

  4. just another lie, relax/

  5. I saw a program on I the National Geographic channel that was talking about how if our planet on a global scale was six degrees warmer it can have catastrophic consequences.  Using some of the "natural" disasters from the past it gave some clear clues as to what we could expect from the future if trends continue the way they are.  We are already being affected as the comments above indicate.  One of the problems we should be able to clearly see is how we are using the planets resources at an alarming rate.  Trees for instance, I live in an area that is known for having lots of trees but new home construction has decimated large areas of forest and greenlands.  Everything that is on the earth is connected in one huge biological circle.  You cut down all the trees it affects our oxygen levels which leads to death for all species, some sooner than others.  We are doing everything wrong by not showing respect for our eco-environment.  But I agree that it can be reversed or at least slowed tremendously.  Tomorrow is the 38th anniversary of Earth Day, we should listen and see if we can make 2008 the year we collectively do something to change our course.

  6. It's worse that other species have to be affected due to us, we don't deserve any sympathy. Whether others believe it or not we are the main contribution to the issue. We will deserve what we gave mother nature in return: chaos, and unfortunately the innocent willl suffer as well. The innocent are the species dieing out due to our selfishness. And lets face it. We're all to blame. Of course were not going to stop, just look at all the ignorant people posting commments on how global warming is a myth, well all the proof is in the atmosphere and there's nothing we can do when you have nonbelievers like that. I don't think the question is what's worse, bringing ourselves down or bringing down over half the species with us, the utter, shameful truth is that we are going to continue bringing other species and ourselves to extinction. Love of Truth, you are one of the most intellectual people on this planet that I know of at least, but what do i know? You're one person, I'm one person, and the few people who care only make a small percentage. Just think of mankind and it's history itself. Mankind has always been either up or down, never down and out, but we're at that point when we are going to be down and out, along with our planet's species. I don't expect the skeptics to listen to me. After all, I'm no more than a fifteen year old teenager, and words can only mean what others make them out to be. I'm sorry to say I don't think there's very much time to save ourselves or anything else at all.

  7. Are rhetorical questions a route to genuine conversation and dialog, an attempt at consciousness raising or a prompt for alleged "answers' which  demonstrate  a lack of both consciousness and concern? Somehow, LoT, in spite of it all you have your answer -- the people who care, genuinely care and are doing what they can, the others have neither the capacity for rational thought nor the inclination to bestir themselves from their opinionated rants. Furthermore your sampling allows you to tally pretty accurately what percentage of the human species might be worth saving from itself if it can figure out how to do it. Brilliant!  Good Job!

  8. Name one species which is extinct because of Man Made global warming?
