It all depend on context I think. Sometimes lies are necessary and so is concealing the truth, in other cases it's the worst thing you can do. In some cases it doesn't matter if you lied someone straight to the face or simply hid the truth from them, both are equally bad. In other cases lying to someone is worse since it was a face to face situation.

I'll stop over analyzing things ... =/ ... and pick one of the two ...

Lying to someone in person would be worse. This most often happens since they have asked about it and wants you to tell them the truth. When you hide the truth from them they haven't asked you to tell the truth, it just sits there.
