What's wrong with My Xbox/ Halo 3?

My Xbox won't let me get onto xbox live. I try to get on and follow the instructions on the website exactly. but when i try to get on and create a gamer tag it says "a new update is available from xbox LIVE. Do you wish to continue (if you decline you will be automatically signed out of xbox LIVE)" so i hit A and it start's to download the update and it says "unable to aply update" and throws me back to the dashboard. and it's ruining all my game disks by creating some kind of scratch ring around them. I solved this by turning the console on it's side (which limits the # of places I can put it) and filling in all the ruined disks with pizza grease. The tray won't open unless violently flicked. my halo 3 won't save games I'm in progress on. (yes I go to the pause menu, hit save and quit and return to the home screen. I even exit out of the game completely and return to the dashboard before powering the console off. I'll go back and hit resume solo game and it just starts me at the cinematic part and doesn't skip forward at all. so this makes the "save" feature useless to me. also, it won't let me play saved film clips or campaign or multiplayer films after I've saved them to my library. what should I do. I have started saving up for a new Xbox which I hope will let me on to Live and possibly fix the problems with halo 3 but I don't wanna go blow 500 on a product that works fine otherwise.

that happened to my friend and she had 2 buy a brand new x-box. It happened on halo-3 and her other friend had the same problem. I think its caused by halo 3. Good Luck!
