Question:

What's wrong with me? I mimic people-

MY voice and mannerisms tend to change radically in conjunction to whom I am around. I do not do this on purpose. On occasion, it is embarrassing because the person thinks I am mocking their accent. I also use an accent when asking for directions and talking to knew people. I have no discernible origin accent, but I often speak like I am from europe- Ireland, or Germanic, East European countries. I'm from Atlanta, GA- so if anything, I should have a southern accent- but I only have that if I'm around southerners. I've mimicked Indians, east Asians and Chinese, as well- not on purpose and certainly not to mock. Please help.

  1. This happens to me after watching certain habits for hours, like in a movie.  God forbid I listen to Daniel Craig or Simon Pegg for an hour!!  It happens. But it is important to not lose who you are. Try to take your time in responding to different people.  And, it may sound crazy, but I think you should spend some time talking to yourself.  Learn who YOU are.  And try not to be so entertained by how someone sounds while they're talking.  Try to focus more on what they are saying.  Good Luck!!

  2. There are social psychology studies about that very thing.  We, as humans, tend to mimic each other.  It's a natural thing for us to do.  Since you are aware of your mimicking capacity, you might want to restrain it a bit when you are with others with other accents...tough I know, but it may help you not alienate others inadvertently.

  3. A lot of people do that.  I wouldn't worry about it too much, at least it shows that you're actually listening to people when they speak

  4. It's kind of the body's reaction to try and fit in. I don't know really...I think it may be that some people can just pick up others body movements and speech better....When you catch yourself doing this, try to correct it

  5. This is so interesting.  I wish I could help you - you certainly are unique.

  6. teehee... me too!

I had a girlfriend who grew up in TJ, Mexico. She has an obvious accent. It took several apologies and conversations for me to convince her that I had NO IDEA I was picking up her accent.

  7. You are sweet, keep it up. You should not try to change
