Question:

What's wrong with my baby girl?

She's one month and 3 weeks old.

She cries like crazy almost everyday. I changed her diaper, fed her, burped her, all the other things and it doesn't seem work. My friends think she is colic.

What causes colic exactly?

  1. My son was colic and I had to put him on a special formula.  It was enfamil nutramigen.  It's extremely broken down so that the baby can digest it easier.  She might also be gassy but can't pass it.  My second son was like that and his stomach always hurt so the doctor put him on Enfamil Gentlease

  2. nothing. it just happens. but they will grow out of it. one day they will just stop and all will be well. maybe she is gasy. try some of those gas drops. if you feed her formula that could be it too. all you can do is put her in her room put on some soft music and some colorful lights and close the door. she will cry herself to sleep soon enough. babies jsut need to cry sometimes. it is nothing on you. so dont think you are a bad parent. from what i hear you are a good mommy and keep up the good work .and remember we are here if you need us :D

  3. It sounds like Colic to me.

    Check this out:

  4. Our son was going through the same thing. I took him to the doctor to rule out any possible problems and the doctor, no lie, handed him back to me and said, "There's nothing wrong with him other than the fact that he is 7 weeks old." We just moved and I had his medical records sent to our new house... I was looking over the paperwork and noticed the doctor marked it as "colic" at that visit.

I found that it helped to sing and rock him, finding a position that was comfortable for him. He liked to lay tummy to tummy in the cradle position. It was very difficult and lasted for quite a while. When he would go to sleep, he'd pass a lot of gas... so I do believe it was just gas, probably caused by formula. If I had known how harsh formula was on a baby's system I would have been much more likely to persevere through the difficult breastfeeding times. :(

  5. My baby was like that. I too thought that she had colic. Then I changed the brand of diapers I was using and she was a totally different baby. Try it. It may work or it may not. It is worth the switch if that is what it is.

  6. No knows what it could possibly be. But it also could be just a immature digestive system. Babies don't have the ability like us too get rid of gas. My son was colicy and also had acid reflux ...You can give her some gripe water, colic medicine. If it is really bad, take her too the Dr and your Dr will prescribe a colic medicine if nothing helps. But other then that, there's not much u can do. My son was like that for 3 1/2 months. Good luck

    P.s Ava is really cute!

  7. Some babies don't handle the change from being outside the womb very well, which is what colic is.  There really isn't anything you can do if your baby has colic other then try to comfort her when she cries.  My son was the same way, so for him we took turns walking around and bouncing him.  Shushing works for some babies as well as simply turning them on their side, you could also try one of those mommy bears that simulate the heartbeat or a tight swaddle.  If worse comes to worse...try a car ride.  Just remember that it does eventually get better.

  8. I suggest you read a book called "Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp (sp?) it explains the idea of colic very well and gives some great pointers!  It worked like magic for my girl!

  9. Unfortunately no one knows what exactly colic is, some people think its a chronic gassy baby, others think it has something to do with the nervous system not being fully developed. Try swaddling her and singing to her for awhile. Worked like a charm for my babe.

  10. try swaddling her, using white noise, a pacifier, and putting her to sleep in a bouncy seat or swing.

  11. If it is colic, you should read up on it and plan to go thru some tough times.  It can last up to 3 months.  There are many things you can try to help her - every baby is different.

Most importantly, try not to lose your patience!  Parents with colicky babies are much more likely to hurt their children.  IF you feel stressed or angry at all, take a breather.

  12. Is she using formula?

She could have a problem with the formula. It can cause gas's and fussiness. She may need a made to be gentle on her belly or even soy.

    Tried Mylacon drops?

    Supposed to relieve gas.

    Made sure shes completely burped?

Air bubbles can make her sad.

I also use powder on my baby. Johnsons with Aloe and Cornstartch with each diaper change. It helps keep the baby feeling extra dry. My baby cries when shes feeling wet or damp.

  13. It sounds like colic. There is no know cause to colic. They used to think it was caused by gas, but they found out that is not so. The baby may have gas from crying so much and swallowing excess air. They say to try to 5 S's:

    Swaddling

Shooshing (loudly in the babies ear)

    Swinging

    Sucking (on a pacifier)

Side or Stomach (try laying them on their side or stomach)

White noise can sometimes help (that would be shooshing), like a radio turned to a static channel, the vacuum running, water running, etc. or you can buy an actual white noise sound machine, but they get pretty pricey.

When my daughter went through this, she would get gas on top of it, so I would lay her on her stomach across my lap and pat her back and it helped for a while. We would carry her around in the car seat (she was buckled in of course)... sometimes the actual swing doesn't help them, so you may have to over exaggerate the swinging, I always put my daughter in the car seat and swung her in that if it got too bad. We also used to put her in the car seat and turn on the washing machine and put the car seat on the top (do not leave her side of course.) Just some ideas that worked for us...

If it gets to the point you can not handle it, just put her down in the crib and walk away and take a few minutes to regroup. It will not hurt her to cry, just tell yourself it is making her lungs stronger. Good luck.

  14. No ones what causes it, but here are some informative sites to help cure it.

One thing that does work is white noise... Turn on the vacuum and the baby stops crying and will fall asleep.  If you don't want your vacuum motor to burn out you can try playing the radio on static (just static no voices or anything). You might find a recording for this online. I've read that this works because it reminds baby of the sounds of the womb.
