What's wrong with my beta fish?

Something happened to my beta fish! I was taking him out of his bowl to clean it and I think one of his fins got caught in the net! When I finally got him out, there looked like there was a piece of his fin in the bottom of the cup I put him in. He started to breathe very hard and went to the bottom of the cup. He's now in his bowl, and is hanging out at the top and not moving much! He's not dead, but I'm afraid he's very close to it! Please help, I don't want him to die!!!

  1. i think u should go to pet store to get another one cause sounds like it is going to die. I know u don't want it to but my fish was on top for a while like that next thing i now it was dead. sorry.

  2. My first question is why are you netting him out of his bowl?  Your fish should not leave his bowl at all.  You should only be changing out 1/2 of the water not the whole bowl at one time.  Use a turkey baster to remove debris from the bottom of the bowl and only remove 1/2 the water.  Top off with room temperature dechlor water.

Unfortunately bettas don't move that much anyway.  He could just be in shock from the ordeal.  Try not to move him or his bowl.   Feed as normal.  Give him a few days keeping an eye on his fin.  You don't want a bacterial infection to set in.
