Question:

What's wrong with my car's air conditioning?

After I replaced my car's battery I've noticed that the air conditioning only cools when the car is moving. When I'm stopped at a red light I feel the car jerk a little then the air from the a/c gets warm. Once I start driving again the air starts to cool down. What's going on???

  1. Sounds like your belt may need tighten to the a/c compressor and may need a little more freon.

  2. That sounds weird guy. If the A/C still gets cold its not a gas thing, and obviously the system still works (if only when your driving). The only thing I could think of is that the belt driving the A/C compressor is loose, hence when the car is idling and the compressor kicks in the belt slips on the compressor due to the resistence of the compressor. If the compressor does not spin then the air will get hot.

    Good luck.

  3. the battery had nothing to do with that. it probably needs charged.

  4. check the connections around the compressor. maybe soomething got loosened by hitting against it when you put the new battery in. It seems that the alternator has to put out that extra juice (when the car is rev ving more) to actuate the compressor clutch. Check the relays to be sure they are nice and clean at the connections.

    (The relay actuates the clutch)

  5. It sounds like the air conditioning unit needs to be re-set.

    Good luck. h
