Question:

What's wrong with my drives off the tee?

I purchased a new Taylormade driver. 8 out of 10 times my shot off the tee has very little elevation and goes maybe 90-100 yards, regardless of how hard or soft I hit it. I'm thinking it may be a top spin problem? I didn't have this issue with my old driver. Any suggestions?

  1. You may have the ball too far back in your stance or not teed high enough. It sounds like you are hitting the ball with the bottom of the club face, which can put top spin on it. The same thing can happen if the ball is not teed up high enough.

If your driver has an oversized face, you should tee the ball higher than if it were a smaller face. You should have about 3/4 of the ball above the club head with the club resting on the ground behind the teed ball. This might seem a little too high but you will see a better trajectory.

Another problem you might be facing is the loft on the club. A lot of amateur golfers think that they need a 9 or 10 degree driver when really a 12 to 13 degree driver is better for them. If this is the case, then move the ball a little more forward than you are used to. This will had some loft to the club as you are hitting the ball on the upswing.

  2. SHAFT SHAFT SHAFT SHAFT SHAFT, NEED A NEW SHAFT SHAFT SHAFT SHAFT SHAFT.

P.S. if you have what you think is the 'correct' shaft, then you are just over swinging. that is the name of the problem and check out a golf website to find the common fixes.

  3. i agree 100% with knh959.Also,what degree,if not a high swingspeed hopefully a 10.5 or higher.

  4. I doubt that it's the driver's fault.  It sounds like you may not be teeing it up high enough and/or you don't have the ball forward enough in your stance.  Remember that driver is the only time the club should meet the ball on the upswing.

  5. I think the shaft is a little too stiff for your swing speed. Try a softer shaft.
