Question:

What's wrong with my garbage disposal?

It makes a humming noise, but the blades won't turn. There is nothing in there blocking them, I cleaned it out. BUT, I did notice that there seems to be some sort of corrosion/rust? that seems to make the blades stick...

I live in an apartment and have rental insurance. Should I get this checked out and use my insurance to cover it? And how much do you think that would cost if I didn't use my insurance? And... does this sound like I need a brand new disposal?

TIA

  1. I agree with PR2, find that wrench to free it up.  If it spins freely, but still locks up/hums when turned on, the bearings are probably shot.

As to replacement, a new unit is anywhere from $40-120, depending on size and quality, and is usually quite easy to replace.

BUT, I would think this is considered part of the apt and should be covered by the management.

Finally, standard insurance wouldn't cover a mechanical or maintenance item like this, and your deductible is probably more than the price.

  2. You just need to stick the hex wrench up into the spot in the bottom of the disposal and turn it until the blade loosens up (1/2 a turn is usually enough).  You might also need to push the little reset buttonon on the bottom near the place you put the hex wrench.

Its not a big deal.   More info here: http://www.naturalhandyman.com/qa/qagarb...

If you can't figure it out from there, call the handyman or landlord and they can show you what to do, or deal with it if the problem is more than just that.

  3. Most garbage disposals come with a little hex wrench that your apartment complex should have left with you. Most apt complexes hang it in a pouch on the cupboard below the sink. If not, a set of Alan Keys/wrenches will work. If it runs and makes noise, you need these tools, but if it stops, there is a little red reset button on the bottom.
