Question:

What's wrong with my internet/router?

We just got a new netgear router and it connects directly to the main computer, so this computer works. But, for some reason the internet is very weak on the other computer which is about 8 feet away. I've tried checking the IP Address and that isn't the problem. There are no nearby phones or microwaves to interfere with the signal. The other computer fails to even recognize this network at times. What's wrong?

  1. Most likely you need a new network cable, probably the plug on one end or the other is loose, or there's a broken wire in it somewhere.

  2. If you are using a Long 25-50 foot Ethernet cable to connect your modem to your router it will weaken your connection a lot. I have self experience with that.

If you truly checked your I.P address then on the back or bottom of your router locate the reset button and press and hold it for about a minute, if you see the lights acting weird just keep on holding it until all the lights are solid or active. Repeat for your modem as well if necessary.

  3. You got to tell us it's by ethernet (cable) or by wireless. If it's by Ethernet, like the girl suggested, check your cable connection. If it's by wireless, man, there are tons of reasons and we need more info to narrow the cause. Check these items:

    - Netgear antenna in upright position?

    - The computer can connect to other "good" routers or not?

    - If the computer is a desktop, is its antenna in upright position? And if it's a laptop using a mini PCI wireless card, make sure the antenna (two tiny cables) are connected to the card (you need to open the back cover of the computer to check it out).
