I adopted an approx. 8 week old kitten from a shelter about 3-4 wks ago. I ha him for 1 week when he got sick, I took him to the vet, resp. infection, vet gave him antibiotics. day after starting antibiotics kitten started having loose stools, I assumed it was the antibiotics and figured it would get better after we finished them. It has been one week since antibiotics finished and still with loose stools, also today had what looked like blood splattered on sides of litter box. He's also doing this funny thing where it's like he sneezes about 15-20 times in a row and then his nose bleeds, not a lot of blood and it stops almost as soon as it starts. I'm taking him to the vet this afternoon, but I would like to be prepared or what I might find out.

  1. Of course, take your vets advice on treating your kitten, but consider mixing some acidophillus in wet food a couple times a day for a week.  It's an all-natural supplement that can be found in the vitamin section of any pharmacy that will help correct any imbalance of the natural flora in his digestive tract that may have been upset by the antibiotics.  I've used this in a similar situation with my cat when he was just a kitten and it worked wonders.

You may find that your baby has other issues, too, but for the GI problem, it's effective, won't harm him and definitely worth mentioning when you're at the vets office.

    Good luck!

  2. my guess is that there is nothing serious. but, that doesn't mean that nothings wrong. i would take him to the vet just to make sure. i bet that the loose stools are from the antibiotics. when you take antibiotics, the medicine stays inside of you for a little longer. even after you stop taking it. the antibiotics also can mess up your digestive  system. ask your doctor while your there about what you can do to get it back on track. there definitely could be something wrong. its possible that your cat has allergies. i don't know much, but these are some guesses. hope this somewhat helps! get better little kitten!

  3. I am not a vet, and my kitty has had several respiratory infections.  My best guess is that the kitty had more than just a respiratory infection.  Possibly pneumonia?  As for the loose stools - those aren't all that unusual in sick kitties...but the blood would be a huge concern.  Unfortunately, I am not sure what would cause this problem in a kitty.  I wish you and your kitty the best of luck with the vet this afternoon.

  4. Be sure to tell the vet what happened with your kitten on antibiotics.  He may want to change the antibiotics used.  Seems like a real case of an upper respiratory infection that the initial antibiotic was not real effective in treating.  Now, respiratory infections are viral, so the antibiotic is used to guard against secondary problems.

  5. Oh NOOOO! Poor wee thing!  Good that you're taking him to the vet. Not sure what it could be but sounds like really needs sorted out.  They're very vulnerable at that age but, on the other hand, he's made it through weeks 1-8 so he's a fighter.

Could be cat flu or a bad respiritory infection  maybe that he's having a hard time shaking off as he's so teeny

  6. I recently too adopted a kitten who was very sick, bacterial infection, viral infection, upper respiratory, worms etc..... Her symptoms were very similar to yours. First the vet switched her feeding to 1 tbls every 4 hours, then my doctor also had her on antibiotics and a med which was called colostrum... I would ask your doctor about adding colostrum which will benefit kitty by boosting the immune system to help him fight off whatever is plaguing him. It is the same thing kittens receive from their mother when they first drink her milk.  As a last resort I had to add having my kitten put in a tent for 3 days with nebulizer treatment 2 times a day. I have seen a vast improvement in my cat since she started this regimen. Antibiotics can add to her loose bowels, and the stress of being sick can be a factor also. I wish you all the best with your kitty and will say a prayer.
