Question:

What's wrong with my knees?

About two weeks ago I decided to start jogging. So every day I'd briskly walk about 1.5 miles and do little jogging spurts here and there. I did that for four days. Then my knees started to hurt. For a while it really hurt to the point where walking was painful and I just wanted to sit at home with a hot water bottle on my knee.

My question is how do I know which part of my knee is damaged? Is it the ligaments and or tendons? or did I ruin the cartilage in my knee? Oh, and what can I do to speed up the healing?

Background info. I'm male, 24yo 175lbs 5'10". And have led a more or less sedentary lifestyle for the last couple years.

  1. run on grass or turf. Concrete is really hard on the joints. Also I'd say you should walk briskly for another week before moving up to jogging. Ease the transition a bit

  2. Could be knee sprain. If it is torned ligament or tendon it will be much more painful so that you probably couldn't walk at all. I would get some knee support/brace you can buy at Walgreens or something. Its up to you if you want to see a doctor but I wouldn't think it is something serious. But sprained knee does require some time.

  3. partner your on the right path. My advise is to start out a little slower - don't let your entheusiasm get the best of you, because you just might scare yourself back into the couch.

diet is important - avoid soy and gluetens - research it, don't just take my word.

Make sure you have good shoes - support is everything. Also, run/walk  on soft surfaces. Concrete is the worst for your joints and back.

and stretch, before and after. Also, ubderstand that if youve been a couch potato, you asre going to feel some pain as you re-aquaint yourself with your body...

don't be skeered, and keep up the good work.

  4. It's probably runners knee.
