Since the last two days, whenever I turn it on, I get a blue screen saying "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency"..and then everything works fine later. But why am I getting this message?

It's a Gateway laptop and I bought it in October 2006.

  1. The blue screen informational message is shown at boot up by "chkdsk," a utility used by Windows to check if your hard drives have corrupt data. This check does not occur unless specified by the user or if an external hard drive has been attached and detected by Windows as a "local disk" (like internal hard drives) and not a "removable disk" (like dvd drives).

  2. go to your drives and give it a right click options - tools and the look for error checking click the check now button the a box appear in the bottom you will find two check boxes check the one that says scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

  3. I think when it says disk, it means your hard drive. Maybe its full

  4. your laptop is full , try to uninstall programs which you no need , put picture ,movie and documents in cd or dvd (burn) ,after that right click with each disk (C , D ...) - click properties  - tools - defragment now -click on disk -defragment . good luck!

  5. its not always a hardware issue...suppose u havent shut down windows properly the last time, this message arises,,so wenever this msg comes, just let windows examine the hard disk...

  6. did you try to defrag the disc? try this one first if you havent already

you can find a lot of programms in download.com

this one is realy good, i use it
