What's wrong with my sewing machine?

Hi guys,

I bought this machine (Singer) a few years back but never used it, somebody else used it a few times. Now I want to use it and it's not running at all. The little light that is suppose to go one isn't either.

What should I do, is it worth taking it to a repair shop?

Is there anything i can do before taking it to a repair shop?

  1. At the very least, you should be able to determine what kind of replacement bulb is required (look all over the machine for a stamp indicating model number, then hit the 'net), get one, and see if it works -- then you'll know if power in general is on.  If you have a multimeter, you may be able to CAREFULLY test the "pedal" part, to see if there's voltage reaching the machine itself.  At that point, you should know enough to decide whether to bring it in for repair or not.  If there's no voltage from the "pedal", you may need to replace only that.

Let me say, though, that even if expensive, you should try your best to bring the machine back into service.  The world is already too full of junkyards containing things that ALMOST work, but which the owner was too lazy to try to bring back into service.

  2. Before making any changes, verify that the receptacle that it is plugged into is active(hot). Then if that is working, consider calling around for prices to inspect the machine and estimate for possible repair.

  3. While checking that it is plugged into the wall-- look under the machine for another plug -- sometimes it's the type with one end going to the wall to the machine and then to the foot pedal--make sure it's tightly in it's socket.

Yes, a light bulb will tell you if the machine gets power.

A couple of other possible sources of problems.... make sure the belt is in place and not "stretched".  Make sure the bobbin area isn't packed with lint, strings and what not.  Make sure the needle will go up and down with the wheel... make sure the bobbin wheel is not engaged.

    good luck
