What's wrong with my sod

Question

I just laid 2500 square feet of sod 5 days ago. There are a couple spots that look dead. I lifted the sod in that area and found white substance that looks like cob webs in each of the areas that look dead. Any ideas what that is and how I get rid of it?

Also does anyone know if I should fertilize new sod.

it could be spittlebugs. if you use a insecticide use a granular a spray may burn. if you fertilize use a product called new lawn starter made by fertilome it will not burn if used by the directions.
