  1. Yes you got it right. there is a short. There are 3 places the short can be.

1: the speaker. If it is in the speaker you can try hooking up a different speaker to the stereo and it shouldn't short.

2: The amp. If there is a short in the amp it will shut down any time you put a load on it, like connecting a speaker. If you have connected a different speaker and it still shuts down it is probably the amp. It will need to be repaired  but probably not worth it unless it's still under waranty.

3: the wires. Check your wires very carefully. If the positive and negative wires are touching anywhere along the cables length it will short. check carfully behind both the stereo and the speakers where the wire connects to them. that is usually where it happens. If this is the problem replace them or neaten them up so they don't touch.

This should help unless you have more than 1 occuring at the same time, but track each one, one at a  time and you should figure it out.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Your home stereo has inside it an amplifier. It's used to drive the sound coming from your speakers. If there is a short in the wiring then the amp will try and output its maximum capability until it shuts down.

The 2 speaker wires connecting to the right and left speaker connections have to be kept separated, not torching each other, for each speaker.

If the unit doesn't shut off when the speakers are not connected then the problem probably is in the speaker. If it does then you have an internal problem in your equipment.

Remember for each speaker, to connect pos (+) from the speaker to pos(+) on the equipment and Neg(-) to Neg(-) .
